ENFORCER, by Amber Burns

I’m an Enforcer, It’s what I do.

I was brought to the Boneyard Brotherhood to do one thing, keep everyone in line. Break our code, run afoul of our laws? It’s my boot that will be bringing you back in check. If there was a problem, I’m the one who took care of it; by whatever means necessary. My own safety was never a concern. I enjoyed the thrill, the Adrenalin and the rush that I had lost since leaving the Marines. But, all of that changed when I met her.

Dylan, the nurse who patched me up after a mission went a bit afoul, she managed to setup shop in my head. It was something no other woman had done before; make me care about not only her but myself. Suddenly, I minded if I was going to be in danger, shot at or stabbed. I had to change, for her. But, would the Brotherhood let me?

Kerri Abernathy is an out-of-work scream queen still guilty over her rising-star husband’s self-destruction a year earlier. And he’s left her heavily in debt, to the government and to the mob. Her only way out is a bizarre underground auction where billionaires rent sex slaves for the weekend. Kerri meets Harden Steele and a sexual odyssey begins which will change both of their lives forever. Control, mastery, even bondage begin to reshape Kerri’s way of thinking and her way of life. But outside forces are closing in on Kerri, and even Harden’s vast power cannot protect her. Will Kerri’s past destroy her future? Will she survive and win the love of her life, or lose both? A SUPER hot first novel in a series that will keep you on the edge of your seat craving for more!

Growing up, L.V. Lewis wanted to be an internationally known rock star, but unfortunately, lived in the wrong part of the country to pursue that career (and neither American Idol nor The Voice were available then). An early love for the written word gave her the plan B she sought. Now she pens romance novels that let her live vicariously through rock stars and other fascinating archetypes.

Review ~ Loving Mr. Daniels by Brittainy Chantal Cherry #ASMSG #ComingofAge #NARomance

Brittainy Chantal Cherry writes like Ashlyn Jennings’ and Daniel Daniels’s favorite writer, The Bard! I kid you not. She knows how to turn a phrase, to string words together, to tickle the eight parts of speech. This woman should write songs, or poetry, because those lyrics for Romeo’s Quest, Daniel Daniel’s band, were literally to die for. I love how Daniel and Ashlyn met and connected so profoundly that their dialogue upon meeting made them sound as if they’d known and loved each other for eons.

This story came from such a pure place, there really isn’t a serious comparison to be made to any other coming of age, forbidden love, teacher/student book out there. Loving Mr. Daniels is Cherry’s unique spin on this trope, and I enjoyed reading it immensely.

There is so much to praise about this story, that when one turns to honest critique, the only things I can come up with has to do with some things Ms. Cherry isn’t even responsible for. Her editor might have done her a disservice by not combing through it thoroughly enough for disembodied motions, passive voice, the odd typo, and a few plot points and a bit of melodrama that could’ve been smoothed out by a good developmental editor. But these are craft issues, one and all, which at the end of the day don’t matter to the people who matter most: readers and book buyers.

The average reader won’t care about those things as much as we writers who also read. When readers read it, all they will come away with is how this story made them feel. Having just finished reading this wonderful story, I for one can tell you the answer to that question will be without equivocation: “Pretty Damn Good!”

So, don’t read this story if you’re looking for a study in writing craft. You won’t get that here. But if you want a gut-wrenching, heart-breaking, love and life story full of so many beautiful one-liners, you can’t decide which ones you’d like to quote first, read Loving Mr. Daniels. I am so glad I did!

I rated Loving Mr. Daniels 4.5 Stars!

I received an ARC in exchange for an objective review.

Sunday Sneak Peek ~ Only Her Heart by Olivia Linden ~ #31WriteNow

Only Her Heart

By Olivia Linden

Holding the pieces of her drama riddled life, Jade decides to leave her disappointments in the past and move on. When her aunt opens up about a family secret, she realizes that everyone else seems to do what they please. Well, now so will she. Building life from the ground up isn’t easy, but with the right friends, she creates the life of her once forgotten dreams.

At the crux of an intense love tug-o-war, one question she must answer is which man will play the lead role? Will Julian, the ‘bad boy’ who mysteriously walks back into her life manage to win her heart? Will she find forgiveness and a happy ending with John, Mr. “almost perfect’? Maybe there is someone new on the horizon that she can start fresh with. Life is never simple for Jade, but when she listens to her heart, she begins to open doors to a whole new world.
With new friends, and new exciting adventures, Jade is growing into a woman that she is proud of. The real question she needs to figure out is? What does she want her life to become?

Next to me, John was visibly tense and his phone kept buzzing repeatedly until he placed it on Linden_Jadesilent. My stomach was so twisted that I could barely eat any of the succulent baked chicken or scalloped potatoes Aunt V had prepared. The forced and awkward conversations didn’t help either. I felt my chest tighten like all the air was being sucked out of the room. I had to get away from this circus. Startling everyone in the room, I shoved away from the table, the legs of my chair scraping loudly against the wood floors.

“I’m sorry,” I squeaked out. “I just…need some…air.” I stormed out towards the back patio, leaning up against the wall as I struggled to breath. It was weird because my mind was telling me there was no rational reason why I couldn’t breath, but my body felt like it was defective in the act of doing it. Sitting at the table, I felt like someone had put me in a coffin.

John came storming out the door a few moments later. He looked around frantically until he found me.

“Jade? What’s wrong?” He waited for an answer and when I remained pressed close to the wall, gulping in air, he moved closer.
“Jade?” He examined my stance, taking in my clenched fists and heaving chest. I shook my head, trying to communicate without words that I wanted to be left alone. Knowing John, that wasn’t happening. Concern flashed through his eyes as watched, waiting for me to snap out of whatever was happening to me. Then he gingerly gripped my shoulders and maneuvered me to a chair.

“Sit here,” he directed me. “Now, put your head between your legs. That’s it. Take deep breaths.”

The ringing in my ears lessened, and eventually I was breathing normal. I raised my head, immediately looking away from his sympathetic gaze, and then leaned back covering my face with my hands.

“Thank you,” I spoke between my fingers. John squatted down, resting one hand on my knees, and moving my hands away with the other.

“Was that a panic attack?”
“I guess, I don’t know.”
“Has it happened before?”
“John, don’t worry. It’s not a big deal.” I tried to push his hand away, but he refused to move.

“It’s not a big deal, that you just freaked out in front of your family? You scared us in there.”

Feeling much better, I sprang up out of my chair causing John to jump up quickly.

“Well, I didn’t really plan it John! Sorry, but I was more concerned with breathing than my dinner table manners.”

“Jade, talk to me. Please?”
“Not here. Not tonight.”
“When? I’ve tried to wait you out but, this is too much.”
“John!” I hadn’t meant to yell, but I couldn’t deal with him. His pleading was starting to break me down and I couldn’t deal. We just stared at each other until he blew out a deep breath, and ran his fingers through his hair. I loved when he did that.

Excerpt from A Brand New Ending:

“I don’t want to go anywhere, Braeden. Wherever you are is where I want to be.”

I think my heart does a back flip. “You have no idea how happy that makes me, hearing you say that.”

She gives me a sly smile, her fingers playing in and around mine.

“Can’t describe how amazing this feels,” she speaks. “I’ve never had anyone care for me like you do.”

“That’s a shame,” I respond quickly. “You deserve so much more than that.”

“Do I?”

I lean over her so that our faces are close but I make sure to do it gently, afraid that she might retreat from my touch.

“Yes,” I say softly as our eyes are locked on each other.

We hold our position and I can tell she is nervous, but I want her to make the first move. I made the mistake of pushing it on her the first time and I won’t be doing that again. I can feel the heat of her breath on my face, its oddly intoxicating. But I hold still. I start to count the number of my heartbeats when I suddenly feel force against my lips. I hold back the smile, my hand coming up to cup her cheek. I start to move my lips against her, the waves of ecstasy flowing through my body. After a second, her lips start to move in unison with mine. I’ve kissed lots of women, but it’s never felt quite like this. I don’t know how long it lasts, but I refrain from sticking my tongue in her mouth, fearing that may be too much. I then swear I feel her moan in my mouth, and it’s the most incredible fucking turn on I have ever heard in my life. She must have realized it too considering she pulled her lips off mine, her hands coming up to her mouth.

A Brand New Ending is a book that savages your emotions. There is nothing better than a story that uses emotion to create conflict that is not contrived, but you’re able to suspend disbelief and embrace it as truth. S. A. Rolls does this in A Brand New Ending.

The female protagonist, Phoenix Harper, reads like a metaphor for the mythical bird, because she rises from the ashes of her past life to create a new one. With the love and help of the male protagonist, Braeden Harris, Phoenix overcomes an attempted suicide and a wide range of other situations thrown at her by her less than ideal family life, institutional life, all while trying to navigate just what it means to be involved in a romance that is the real deal despite how quickly they bond and become enamored with one another.

A Brand New Ending is a story filled with suspense, intrigue, and ambiguity which makes for a thoroughly incredible, unpredictable tale. Phoenix and Braeden are linked together by painful episodes in their lives, and even their romance comes with a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns, and pain beyond measure.

The themes of this story include weighty issues such as child abuse, victimization, battery, alcoholism, compassion, love, loyalty, and friendship. The secondary characters in this book were also well-drawn, and achingly real. The alternate narration employed in the novel allowed us to get into the heads of both Phoenix and Braeden. This made for a richer plot, and stellar characterization.

A Brand New Ending packs a powerfully emotional punch of love, trust, compassion, forgiveness, and renewal that brings us to a ending you won’t see coming, but was altogether satisfying. S.A. Rolls is one to watch.

First, I just have to say that I have been enamored with Mary’s cover ever since I was presented with the opportunity to host her blog tour. Her cover is quite possibly one of my all-time favorites. It is sweet, sexy, colorful and speaks to the kind of relationship that Nicki and Adam had.

Having lived in Texas once upon a time, I am quite familiar with the city of  Bellaire which sits right smack dab in the middle of Houston. We used to call it the city within the city. Imagine my delight when I realized this story was set there. It made me all the more eager to read it. I was college aged when I lived there, so it wasn’t difficult for me to remember the culture and atmosphere that didn’t change much from the eighties to the nineties in Bellaire.

The story opens with Nicki Johnson being brought up to speed by a couple of friends on Adam Kincaid, her first love who was an exchange student from England while she was in high school. Just prior to their senior year, Nicki and her mother survived a tragic accident that took the life of her only sister. Her game plan early on was just trying to survive that tragedy. She didn’t bargain on Adam Kincaid, the boy she had a bit of a crush on, becoming the friend who would help her through this difficult time.

When they became friends, Adam was attached to another more popular girl at Bellaire High School, and while Nicki wasn’t looking necessarily to split them up, she found herself longing for something more with him as they both came to realize they had a lot in common. It takes a visit from Adam’s cousin who also takes a shine to Nicki for them to finally come to the realization that they should be spending the time he has left in the states, together.

I wasn’t sure if the device of Nicki reminiscing the entire early relationship was a good choice, but the book opens and closes with her and Adam as adults, navigating the treacherous waters of demanding careers on both their parts, parental expectation on his, and the span of years they’ve been apart. The ending sets up the next book in the series well, making the reader anxious to see how Adam’s immersion in scandal back in the UK brought him back to the states, while Nicki has gone on to work on the staff of the POTUS.  It is my guess that in the next book Mary will be back in stride as book two promises to be a political romance that rivals her other novels of this genre.

I give Beside Your Heart 4 out of 5 stars.

Beside Your Heart Excerpt:

“No British literature. Isn’t this supposed to be an English class?” Adam asked.

“Uh.” My ancestors would’ve been proud of the jolt of American patriotism that hit me.  “There was a revolution two hundred years ago. We write our own books now.”

He leaned back in his seat with a smile. “I think I heard about that.”

“We still share the same language.”

“Sometimes I’m not too sure.”

“I bet not.” I could imagine what he thought of a Texas accent.

He picked up the list of books again. “What about Catcher in the Rye?”

“I read it a long time ago when I was, like, eleven.” I laughed a little as I remembered how I’d first come to read it.

“Is there something funny about that?”

“Yeah. My father had suggested I read it then. The book is the classic coming-of-age story. Clearly, he wasn’t really thinking about whether or not it was appropriate for an eleven-year-old.”

“Really? Why?”

“Well, for one thing, the main character is a guy who swears a lot.”

“I suppose I swear a lot.” He cracked a sly smile. “At least compared to you Yankees.”

“Yankees? You’re in the South.” I laughed.

“What else is inappropriate about the book? Now I’m interested. It can’t only be a few swear words.”

“No, it’s not just that. It’s…” I hesitated for a moment as I realized I was about to bring up the topic of sex with Adam Kincaid. What the hell, I thought. I should be matter-of-fact about it. He had a girlfriend and would never want anything with me. I could hide I thought he was hot, so I shrugged. “Holden, the main character…he’s a little sexually frustrated.”

His eyes twinkled, and it felt as if my words hung in the air. I wanted to squirm in my seat. ‘Sexually frustrated’—like me checking out Adam Kincaid.

His proper upbringing showed again as he sidestepped the issue, yet he smirked. “That sounds like an adventurous book to be on an American high school syllabus.”

“Like I said—it’s considered an American classic.” I laughed. “I guess some things are sacred.”

“But of course.” The gleam appeared in his eye again, and he turned toward me in his seat. “Teenage sexual frustration is sort of a rite of passage, if you will.”

There went the good-English-boy manners out the window. His tone, the look in his eye, his body language—was he flirting with or taunting me? I decided the former was impossible, and if the latter, I wasn’t going to back down. With two parents who were lawyers, debate was a family routine.

“A rite of passage? More like a biological fact, isn’t it?” I asked, casually clicking my pen. I raised a brow. “Especially for guys.”

“You’re right about that,” he said with a grin.

His eyes shifted downward, and I could feel him give me a once-over. I wondered what he thought. I was no Meredith, but I had enough self-confidence to know I wasn’t butt-ugly either—even with my scars. I couldn’t tell, but he’d distracted me so much, I jumped when I heard Mrs. Anderson ask, “Your name, dear?”
