Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life. Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?
Mary Whitney’s Author Bio
Even before she graduated from law school, Mary knew she wasn’t cut out to be a real lawyer. Drawn to politics, she’s spent her career as an organizer, lobbyist, and nonprofit executive. Nothing piques her interest more than a good political scandal or romance, and when she stumbled upon writing, she put the two together. A born Midwesterner, naturalized Texan, and transient resident of Washington, D.C., Mary now lives in Northern California with her two daughters and real lawyer husband.

MY REVIEW OF “BESIDE YOUR HEART”
First, I just have to say that I have been enamored with Mary’s cover ever since I was presented with the opportunity to host her blog tour. Her cover is quite possibly one of my all-time favorites. It is sweet, sexy, colorful and speaks to the kind of relationship that Nicki and Adam had.
Having lived in Texas once upon a time, I am quite familiar with the city of Bellaire which sits right smack dab in the middle of Houston. We used to call it the city within the city. Imagine my delight when I realized this story was set there. It made me all the more eager to read it. I was college aged when I lived there, so it wasn’t difficult for me to remember the culture and atmosphere that didn’t change much from the eighties to the nineties in Bellaire.
The story opens with Nicki Johnson being brought up to speed by a couple of friends on Adam Kincaid, her first love who was an exchange student from England while she was in high school. Just prior to their senior year, Nicki and her mother survived a tragic accident that took the life of her only sister. Her game plan early on was just trying to survive that tragedy. She didn’t bargain on Adam Kincaid, the boy she had a bit of a crush on, becoming the friend who would help her through this difficult time.
When they became friends, Adam was attached to another more popular girl at Bellaire High School, and while Nicki wasn’t looking necessarily to split them up, she found herself longing for something more with him as they both came to realize they had a lot in common. It takes a visit from Adam’s cousin who also takes a shine to Nicki for them to finally come to the realization that they should be spending the time he has left in the states, together.
I wasn’t sure if the device of Nicki reminiscing the entire early relationship was a good choice, but the book opens and closes with her and Adam as adults, navigating the treacherous waters of demanding careers on both their parts, parental expectation on his, and the span of years they’ve been apart. The ending sets up the next book in the series well, making the reader anxious to see how Adam’s immersion in scandal back in the UK brought him back to the states, while Nicki has gone on to work on the staff of the POTUS. It is my guess that in the next book Mary will be back in stride as book two promises to be a political romance that rivals her other novels of this genre.
I give Beside Your Heart 4 out of 5 stars.
