About the Author

Author Pic (1)Sarah Latchaw was raised in eastern Iowa and appreciates beauty in mud-splattered gravel roads, weathered farm faces, and combine harvesters powering through cornfields. She also loves to explore the world, thanks to countless family minivan trips across the States to coastal cities and national monuments. This passion for finding stories led to college adventures to Israel and Palestine, Jordan, Slovakia, Germany, and other European countries. Each place’s story rests in the back of her mind and in her childhood photo albums.

In 2002, Sarah received her BA from Wartburg College in public relations and media, and entered the workforce, ready to climb the ladder. However, when researching MBA applications evoked feelings of dread, she realized a corporate marketing career wasn’t for her. With the unfailing support of her loving husband, she chose to pursue a career in freelance and creative writing, and received her MA from Iowa State University in 2009.

These days, Sarah wakes every morning thrilled to cuddle her small children, show them the world, then capture that world and shape it into stories on paper. She also enjoys her piano, volunteering in her community, and reading anything with a cohesive plot. She and her family reside in Des Moines, Iowa.

MY REVIEW OF HYDRAULIC LEVEL FIVE

The names of the hero and heroine in this book are just about as unique as they can get: Aspen Kaye Trilby and Samuel Caulfield Cabral. These lent a true aura of romance to the story, despite their divorce and seven-year estrangement.

Kaye has used extreme sports as her counseling to get over her ex, while he has hit the big time as an author who enjoys success the likes of which one can only compare to J.K. Rowling or George R.R. Martin. Kaye is a Gringa who has been accepted into Sam’s first-generation Mexican American family in their hometown of Lyons, Colorado, while Sam lives the high life in New York City, dating actresses, models and finally his editor, Caroline Ortega.

When Kaye learns that Samuel is returning for his sister, and her best friend, Danita’s wedding with the gorgeous Caroline on his arm, Kaye is spurred to use this opportunity to figure out once and for all why her marriage failed. There was so much they shared in their youth, yet some very pertinent history was glossed over, or not explained at all and taken completely off the table. Samuel doesn’t share his demons and Kaye doesn’t fight to make him reveal what ultimately destroyed their relationship.

Through a series of flashbacks, most of which are metaphorical in nature and appear in Samuel’s book series, and armed with the assistance of her divorce lawyer, we discover right along with Kaye what really happened. Against the backdrop of Danita and Angel’s wedding, Kaye and Sam find the courage to open up old wounds.

Will the eleventh hour revelations be enough to begin the process of knitting them back together, or will the secrets and betrayals be too severe to revive, at the very least, their friendship? Find out by reading for yourself the startlingly well-written and wonderful Hydraulic Level Five.

Latchaw’s story is not one you can read like it’s fluff or gratuitous entertainment; in fact it reads like literary fiction rather than a romance. The reader really has to dig in and pay attention to the excerpts of Samuel’s books as well as the flashbacks from when Kaye and Sam were younger to piece together just what occurred. There is also a large and lively cast of characters to keep track of. So, my advice would be to read this when you want to sink your teeth into a substantive story.

I give HL5 4 out of 5 stars.

My Review of The Mistress by Tiffany Reisz ~ #31WriteNow

The Mistress US CoverI am beyond pleased to host The Mistress by Tiffany Reisz on my blog today. This series hold a dear place in my heart, so I was inordinately elated when the opportunity was presented to me by The Novel Tease. There is a tour-wide Giveaway below, so take time and read the entire post so you won’t miss your oportunity to win fabulous prizes!

Book Synopsis:

There’s punishment-and then there’s vengeance.

Nora Sutherlin is being held, bound and naked. Under different circumstances, she would enjoy the situation immensely, but her captor isn’t interested in play. Or pity.

As the reality of her impending peril unfolds, Nora becomes Scheherazade, buying each hour of her life with stories-sensual tales of Søren, Kingsley and Wesley, each of whom has tempted and tested and tortured her in his own way. This, Nora realizes, is her life: nothing so simple, so vanilla, as a mere love triangle for her. It’s a knot in a silken cord, a tangled mass of longings of the body and the heart and the mind. And it may unravel at any moment.

But in Nora’s world, no one is ever truly powerless-a cadre of her friends, protectors and lovers stands ready to do anything to save her, even when the only certainty seems to be sacrifice and heartbreak…

My Review of The Mistress

Some authors have the amazing gift of being able to revisit characters they create in a series, over and over again, with a fresh plot and an interesting continuation that doesn’t leave the reader bored to tears or drowning in a sea of predictability. The examples that come to mind for me are not erotic romances in the purest sense, but I’ve seen this done by Diana Gabaldon, J. D. Robb, and others that I won’t name here for the sake of brevity. Now I can add Tiffany Reisz to that list, because she is doing this, and doing it well with her Original Sinners series.

The Mistress, the fourth in her eight-book series, which rounds out the four books she dubs the “red years,” did not disappoint. Reisz brought it, just as her readers have begun to expect of her since The Siren burst into the literary world, shocking the socks off some and arousing the hell out of others. There hasn’t been a book or series of this caliber to juxtapose faith against the blatant breaking of all the commandments since “The Thorn Birds,” and the steamy novels of Father Andrew Greeley. I would propose that Tiffany Reisz is the contemporary Colleen McCullough–on steroids!

Reisz is also the queen of the cliffhanger in my humble opinion, because with each and every book she answers more questions about the characters and brings them full circle, but then she creates more and leaves the reader at a point where they are salivating to discover what happens next. She did just this with The Prince, the book just prior to this one. Nora’s vanilla love, Wes Railey, the prince of Kentucky has proposed to Nora in the stables of his family’s horse farm. Just when we believe Reisz is about to give us an HEA, this proposal is interrupted by sinister intruders who knock both Wes and Nora out, leaving Wes to awake to the cold reality of having lost his fiancée just moments after she’d accepted his proposal.

Meanwhile, Nora has been taken by an unknown assailant who leaves a chilling calling card. And while he loathes having to do so, Wes has to call on the very men from whom he’s been trying to wrest Nora away since book one: Soren and Kingsley. Indeed these two are his best and only shot of getting Nora back alive, and Wesley knows this. The Mistress opens with Nora awaking to recognize her captor, and Wesley driving nonstop from Kentucky to New York to enlist the aid of the men whom he believes corrupted his Nora in ways he has abhorred since he learned of their existence. Yet, in this book, Wes will finally reconcile his feelings for Soren and Kingsley, and because I don’t want to be spoilery, I won’t tell you how.

As Nora becomes a modern-day, kinky version of Scheherazade, and entertains her kidnapper with stories of her sexcapades with Soren and Kingsley, her captor’s husband and brother, respectively, she comes to the deadly realization that this woman is stark, raving mad, and she will only come out of this predicament alive if she’s able to keep her wits about her.

Get your copy of the Mistress now, if you haven’t already, and read this remarkable tale of a decades old vendetta one woman has against a man who rescued her from deportation by a marriage of convenience; and see what secret her sibling and this man kept that drove her to the brink of madness. My advice would be if you haven’t read, The Siren, The Angel, and The Prince, begin there, because the story has been so intricately woven together, you don’t want to miss any pieces of the puzzle that lead us to the pinnacle of the otology known as The Original Sinners. Books five through eight, dubbed the white years, will be my most highly anticipated books in a series of all time, since I’m already going through TOS (The Original Sinners) withdrawals.

I give The Mistress four and one half out of five stars only because I felt the handling of Wesley’s character arc was a bit abrupt to me, personally. What happened totally made sense in the long run, but he went from one extreme emotion to another within a span of days. Perhaps it would have been better served to have more time to elapse so the suspension of disbelief wouldn’t have been called into question at all.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

My Review:
If you are able to read Arouse and Allure together, this would be my suggestion, and as you proceed with my review, do so with caution because there be spoilers in them there words below!
It’s so very nice to read a book about two grown and sexy people who are married and there’s no game playing or series of events contrived to get them together. Apparently, in Arouse  the first book, Liv and Dean’s marriage is stretched almost to the breaking point by real conflict that many couples face. The first book ended in somewhat of a cliffhanger because you just know from Dean’s reaction to the previous “pregnancy scare”  the news Liv shared might not be welcome.
Allure is author Nina Lane’s sophomore offering, which is constructed a bit differently than the first book with alternate points of view, sandwiched between flashbacks, much like book one. While writing books preach against the flashback, somehow, I found this worked largely do to the construct of the story. There were only a couple times that flashbacks interrupted something current which I thought could probably have waited for a more opportune time.
The relationship between these two is much stronger than they each agonize over in their heads, and like most stories where you as the reader knows more than the characters, I often found myself muttering to the characters to talk to each other about their fears, their concerns, their hurts real and perceived, for goodness’ sake!
Allure picks up where Arouse left off. Liv has shared with Dean that she is, in fact, pregnant despite the scare they experienced previously and they pulled away from each other emotionally. Liv from Dean because she misinterprets his reaction to the pregnancy scare and seeks friendship, solace–something in the friendship with her cooking instructor. Dean draws from his work as a Medieval History expert and Professor at King’s College. The pregnancy, even as a happy event, exacerbates the pressure that has already been brought to bear on their relationship.
After a steamy opening scene between the couple, Judge Robert West, Dean’s father has a heart attack, necessitating an impromptu visit to Dean’s childhood home in California. The dysfunctional lot which is Dean’s family give Liv either the cold shoulder or indifference.
As they work to heal the rift in their marriage from events that occurred in book one, they dive headlong into family and work drama unlike anything they endured in book one. Liv’s pregnancy and her new resolve to make herself into someone who is more respected than loved by her husband, she reveals to Dean a woman who isn’t as fragile as he originally believed.  Dean’s attempts to temper his protectiveness and assuage his guilt, continue to cause problems, and a new problem on Dean’s job tests them both in ways they could never have imagined. There’s no dangling cliffhanger at the end, but the reader still comes away wanting to read the next book, because you realize they still have some issues they need to resolve.
As is Nina’s style, the writing is crisp, intelligent, and very sexy.  As only an erotic romance can be, it is equal parts entertaining and titillating.
I give Allure four out of five stars!

Excerpt from Waking Tide

The blinding winter sun awoke Lena that morning. The cold winter light let on how frozen the world was outside, but she felt safe and warm in her bed. The lush down comforter wrapped tightly around her shoulders wasn’t the only thing providing that warmth. Will’s strong body lie next to her, though still sleeping, his presence there with her was more powerful than it had ever been. Her mind quickly flooded with all that had happened the previous night and the love she felt for him quickly grew within her. She didn’t regret being with him. She didn’t regret being weak and allowing him to take over both her body and her soul. In fact, she felt a sort of elated giddiness. A spark of light heartedness that had been absent for so long, yet always trying to find its way back to her.
As much as that spark exhilarated her, there was still a small feeling of fear within her.
She felt afraid and she didn’t know why. No matter how perfect it all seemed, no matter how happy she was in this very moment, being cradled inside of Will’s warm embrace, she still felt the fear. It lied low beneath the surface and it was screaming at her as it had so many other times in her life. It just resided there, within her, an unwelcome visitor in her private moment of bliss with Will. Lena despised the fear, she despised it more than she did the feelings of weakness and for the first time in her life she grew so tired of the fear that she suddenly felt strong enough to push it out of her life. Not just in this moment, but in every moment that she would have from this day forward. She was tired of being afraid of love, afraid of pain, afraid of not being in control, and it was finally time for that fear to leave.
Lena had spent many nights in the cold lonesomeness of her apartment in Georgia wishing the fear away. Many times had she asked herself why she must live with such anxiety and panic. She could feel it in every bone of her body almost every minute of every day. It only physically manifested itself as her feeling short of breath. But inside of her, the anxiety had been raging since she lost her father. She had always felt like a victim, like it wasn’t a choice or a decision. But now, lying with her head against Will’s strong shoulder, she felt…powerful. For the first time in years she actually felt as though she was in control instead of always trying to be. She wouldn’t wish the fear away this time. This time, she would demand it. This time, she would force it. It was her life and she knew deep down that she was finally strong enough to do it.
Lena ran her hand up the center of Will’s chest. She could hear him breathing softly as he slept, the soft thud of his heart beat against the side of her cheek. She wasn’t sure why she suddenly felt her strength return. Perhaps it had never left and she just needed to find it again. Lena knew that it wasn’t Will that had brought it out, though if anyone were capable of doing that for another person, it was surely him. No, Lena felt it was there all along and she had just needed to find it again. But as she looked up at the gorgeous man who held her, her strong protector, she had no doubt that opening herself up to the love that she felt for him had freed her in some way. That somehow, Will had made it possible for Lena to let herself out of the cage she had been living in all these years. It was a prison that had been built by the tragedy of first losing her father and then maintained well by Lena herself all of these years. As such, it was a prison only she could free herself from. It wouldn’t be easy, Lena knew that. It wasn’t as if she could just snap her fingers and all of her fears, insecurities, and anxiety would instantly dissipate. But she could try, with Will. With Will by her side, she felt she could do anything.
Suddenly the thought of Gabby crossed her mind, panic entered her being but was quickly relieved when she remembered that she was at her cheer coach’s house. The last thing lena wanted to do was set a bad example for her little sister. Though Gabby was 17 years old and surely not ignorant of such things, evidenced by her late night partying a few weeks ago. Lena still didn’t want to deal with the awkwardness if Gabby had discovered that Will had spent the night in Lena’s room.
Will’s body began to move in the bed next to her, rolling over towards Lena, he tightly wrapped his muscular arm around the front of her chest, holding her close to him. Slowly, he awoke and gently smiled at her. His dark black eyes speaking every word that Lena needed to hear without any sound leaving his lips. She could be with this man, she had been with him, both in mind and spirit, her entire life. And now that she had finally succumbed to her long felt desire to share her body and soul with him, she felt there was no turning back. Everything had been such a whirlwind of pain and grief in her life, she needed this relief. She needed him. And for the first time ever, Lena began to feel that he was safe.
Safe to need.
Will gently caressed her shoulder, still not speaking a word. No Good morning, no cocky comments like Thanks for last night, which was the type of thing Lena could always expect from him. Just silence for what felt like forever, and it was a wonderful forever. One that could go on and on without any boredom or awkwardness whatsoever.
When he did eventually speak, he only said three words. Three words that he had said many times before. Three words that Lena had denied for far too long. Three words that somehow felt different now than they ever had in the past. Three words that made her let the strong walls of resistance and fear that she had built over the past few years instantly come crashing down.
“I love you.” He whispered in her ear, followed by a trailing kiss down the side of her neck.
Lena gazed up at the stark white ceiling above her, her heart and body flooding with a warm rush.
“Will.” She whispered.
He looked up at her from his position against her shoulder.
“I love you too.”
His dark eyes sparkled and a lovingly familiar and overconfident smile spread across his face while he quickly pulled the down comforter over both of their heads.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

For Noah Sullivan being the best friend to a douchebag and player like Jake Nelson has never been easy. It’s been a rocky road since kindergarten when Jake duct taped Noah to his chair before recess. With just six weeks to high school graduation, Jake accidentally blows his drunken ass up on his grandfather’s tractor, and Noah finds himself immersed not only in a whirlwind of grief, but on a quest to find a mystery girl from Jake’s past.

While cleaning out Jake’s room, Noah and Jake’s dad make a startling discovery. Instead of the obligatory porn collection or pot stash, they find a ring, but not just any ring. Its half a carat of commitment in a platinum setting-proving even man whores have taste. After Jake’s mom pleads with Noah to find the girl who meant so much to Jake, Noah begins a modern day Grail quest to track the girl down.

Since Jake was a notorious player with a legendary collection of trophy panties, Noah finds himself in over his head. There are the usual suspects like Avery, the Ice Princess Jake dated for appearances, or Presley, the school mattress Jake dated for convenience. But the trail begins to point to the most unlikely of suspects: Maddie, the Valedictorian and choir girl who was trying to help the unmotivated jock graduate–the girl who also has surprisingly caught Noah’s eye and meddled with his heart.

Hanging out with Maddie shows Noah a different side of Jake–one that was deeply human and surprisingly douche-free.  And the more he tries to solve the mystery of the ring and of Jake, the more Noah starts to discover about himself and of love.

MY REVIEW

Don’t Let The Title Fool You

“Don’t Hate The Player . . . Hate The Game,” is titled after one of the most over-used clichés in recent years. However, the depth of the characters, the plot, and a twist you don’t see coming recues the story from cliché land, and quite handily I might add.

Noah Sullivan has languished in the shadow of his best friend Jake Nelson since kindergarten, when Jake’s first act of friendship was a prank he loves to reiterate to anyone who asks how they met. Jake’s rapid descent into further douchebaggery becomes the stuff of legend. As an athlete and a young man who hit the genetic jackpot in the looks department, Nelson lives what his friends consider a charmed life, replete with a laundry list of girls who are willing to give him whatever he wants. However, life for Jake takes an unexpected turn in his final year. Unbeknownst to his friends, he undergoes a transformation that he keeps hidden from them.

A month and half before graduation from high school, Jake perishes in a freak accident after warning Noah cryptically by phone of his most recent screw up, literally. Jake’s death leaves Noah and his circle of friends reeling from the tragedy and catapults Noah into the role of secret sleuth to locate the girl Jake himself identifies posthumously as the one with whom he shares the Willie Nelson classic love song, “You Were Always On My Mind,” and purchased her a half-carat platinum diamond engagement ring. Mrs. Nelson begs Noah to find the girl who meant so much to Jake. Unable to deny Jake’s mother, Noah interviews the most likely of the girls who could possibly fit the bill, and comes up empty-handed.

In the process of looking for Jake’s secret lady love, Noah encounters Maddie, the Pastor’s daughter, who would’ve been invisible to a guy like Jake, but the Valedictorian and choir maven had been Jake’s tutor the bulk of senior year. Noah is attracted to Maddie from day one, and as he learns things from her about Jake that alter his perception of his friend forever, he begins to fall for this girl that his and Jake’s circle of friends considered a pariah.

Some parallel story lines that make this story so rich and interesting include Noah’s struggle to work through his grandfather’s death and his father’s abandonment. Chief among the conflict is his inability to forgive his father, who was essentially the same kind of player Noah befriended. This YA story is chock full of life lessons and inspiration. As Noah gets closer to solving the mystery of Jake’s intentions concerning the mystery girl, his mission becomes compromised by his feelings for Maddie, and everyone is blindsided by a secret that provides an unexpected twist to the story that is both poignant and a testament to how much Jake had truly changed.
