LV’s Monday Meanderings… July 16, 2018

Greetings, Readers! I hope you’re enjoying my Monday Meanderings. I’ve created this regular newsletter since beginning my newest day job to keep me engaged with you on a regular basis. This will provide a way for you to know what’s going on with me even though I’m not camping out on Social Media anymore.

Writing, Writing, Writing!

Most of the time, I’m happy to be a part of the writing industry, I truly am. In a perfect world, people who agree to do something for you will do it, and do it with excellence. My writing world hasn’t been so excellent lately. Mainly, because I’m dealing with a person who purports to be professional in their field who isn’t. I’ve written a bit about this in the past here: Am I Too Nice For My Own Good?  But I digress. Recently, I hired someone to do a project for me. An agreement was made and I was promised my project would be complete earlier than I anticipated. However, the first milestone was never reached and an excuse was given, which I accepted because “we’re all human, and life happens, right?” Then the next deadline was missed, but I was given part of the project (just a tiny part). Then I’m thinking, surely the next deadline will be met. Right? Didn’t happen. A month after this professional accepted my project, I still don’t have it. I have been promised yet again it will be ready this weekend. I’m waiting with bated breath. Not! I have no faith that the project will be ready this weekend when only one third of it has been done in a month!

I try to be a nice and understanding person, but writing is my business, and I try to maintain a consistency of quality which begets the title of professional. I’m human, too, so I make mistakes. I have a job that pays my bills and I have my writing business (which currently pays no bills. Hahaha!). In my writing business, I miss deadlines, but rather than make excuses, I own my mistakes, apologize to my readers, and move forward. What I’ve found that happens a lot with the “professionals” I use to support my business is an inconsistency in quality, inefficiency in providing services, and an unwillingness to own their mistakes and make it right.

Is it too much to ask to expect that when someone promises you a project will be done, that it will be done on time? I don’t think so. How do I mitigate situations like these? I guess I need to manage my expectations better, and if that makes me a bitch, then so be it. I am tired of people taking my kindness for weakness and giving me lackluster projects and services for my hard-earned money. In the future, if someone doesn’t uphold the letter of our agreement, I won’t be using their services anymore. Contracts will be iron-clad with language in them that support liquidated damages when milestones and deadlines aren’t met. Simply put, I’m going to be kicking ass and taking names! Names that will be dead to me moving forward in my perfect writing world.

Speaking of writing, if you want to read one of my books while you’re waiting on my new stuff to publish, you can find all my books here: LV Lewis books!

New Genre: Reverse-Harem (It’s Raining Men, Hallelujah!)

Over the past year, I’ve been reading a new romance genre called Reverse Harem (or RH, because we writers love our acroynyms, don’t we?). I heard about this genre about the same time that a very good writer friend mine began writing her own Reverse Harem novels (I’m looking at you, Angel Lawson). If you’re not familiar with it, Reverse Harem novels are those where you have a female protagonist who is the central focus or love interest of three or more male protagonists in a novel. Yes, RH goes there! The idea of RH first began in anime and manga and eventually spread to the romance genre, which has been growing like wildfire.

Nys Glover, author of The Airluds Trilogy, explained RH in the best way I’ve seen yet: “Men have had their harem fantasies forever. I think women have finally given themselves permission to entertain such fantasies, too. But unlike the male fantasy, a woman’s fantasy isn’t so much about sex as it is about romance. It’s the idea of being loved and cherished by more than one man, and protected and supported, too. The steamier end of the market covers the hot sex that’s possible, but it’s not necessary. There are a lot of YA reverse-harem books that contain no sex. In a way it’s like taking popularity to the next level.”

Generally, I am not an early adopter of anything. I tend to be the type who likes to wait and see if something is going to “take” before I go all in. Well, now that I’ve seen that RH is likely here to stay, I’ve been reading some of the stories to see if this genre might be a good fit for me to write (the jury is still out on this, by the way, but you’ll be the first to know if I decide to wade into the waters of RH). My reading taste in Reverse Harem has been primarily the paranormal lane. I find I can suspend disbelief easier if there’s a paranormal slant to the books. There is now a very robust community of authors and readers in the RH genre, and there are sub-genres in the main genre. Who knew? So, if you’re interested in testing the waters reading-wise, I have some recommendations for you.

The Best Reverse Harem Series’ I’ve Read Lately!

One of the first Reverse Harem series I read was Curse of The Gods by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington (Trickery, Persuasion, Seduction and Strength). These novels have a fair amount of world building you have to slog through, and Willa Knight, the main character has quite an inferiority complex, partly due to the lot in life to which she was born, and partly due to the people around her. Although she is likely the clumsiest woman ever born in her home of Minastol. When a mix-up of epic proportions lands her in Blesswood, where Sols (Gods in training) reside, she is forced to keep up the ruse, or die. When she is tasked to serve the Abcurse brothers, her tenuous position in Blesswood becomes even more of a challenge. If you’re a fan of God mythology with a twist, you might find Curse of The Gods to your liking.

Tate James’ Kit Davenport Series was my next foray into Reverse Harems. This series has a total of five books currently, so no need to feel like you’re dangling on a cliffhanger anytime soon (The Vixen’s Lead, The Dragon’s Wing, The Tiger’s Ambush, The Viper’s Nest, and The Crow’s Murder). Heroine Kit Davenport is a world-renowned thief only known by her secret identity, the fox. She is clever, cunning, and has abilities she’s trying to master, but is so busy evading her captors, she’s unable to wield them well. Her driving force is vengeance against those who’ve wronged her, but as she gets closer to that goal, she picks up a group of allies who give her something she’s never had before: acceptance and love. Each book takes her on a different journey to discovering the truth. Tate James is a master at divulging just enough to keep you reading from one book to the next. Once you read the stunning climax, though, you’ll be thoroughly satisfied with the outcome.

My good friend, Angel Lawson, has made Reverse Harem her writing niche in recent months, and I’ve read all of her Raven Queen’s Harem Series (Raven’s Mark, Ebony Rising, Black Magic, Obsidian Fire, Onyx Eclipse and Midnight’s End). All six books are complete, so no need to wait on any followup. Morgan, an aspiring author, receives a scholarship to NYU graduate school, where she is set to realize her dream as a published author writing books about some events from her childhood. Unbeknownst to her, these events may just be more real than she could ever have imagined. Her housemates in her scholarship program just happen to be five of the hottest artists she’s ever met: Sam the photographer, Damien the welder, Bunny the painter, Clinton the musician, and Dylan the historian. Her destiny may rest upon seeking their assistance.

Another RH series by Angel Lawson are The Supers of Project 12. As a lover of all things Marvel and DC, I absolutely adore this series, because I’m a comic book nerd from the old days. If you love Stan Lee’s offerings as much as I do, I’m sure you’ll love The Supers, too. Astrid, the heroine, is the product of a state run group home, where she remembers fantastical things that happened for her and some of the other members of the home. In early adulthood, by day she is helping her guardian and mentor to run a program to train young people who desire to work for the government as operatives. By night, she is a super hero who rids their town of bad guys, until things go awry and she’s thrust into a leading role, and her past meets her present in surprising ways. Some welcome and sexy, and others unwelcome and threatening. Astrid builds a team of loyal allies whom she may have to enlist to take down one or more of their own. Lots of kick-ass action and a sexy reverse-harem take on the super heroes trope.

As a woman of color, I had to find some of these with heroines that look like me, so if you’re also a woman of color and would like to see some heroines of color in this genre, you might want to check out Ripley Prosperina’s The Searchers Series, beginning with Finding Honor. The reading order for the series is Finding Honor, Finding Nora, Finding Valor, and Finding Truth. Nora Leslie, the heroine in this series gets caught up in a tragedy which could be ripped form the headlines of today’s news. The substitute teacher is first regaled as a hero for saving the lives of her students, but then she is linked to a troubled young man who was likewise a ward of the state as she once was, and quickly becomes a suspect. Her introduction to law student, Ryan Valore, and his roommates may just help her find the redemption and love she seeks.

Another Series starring a heroine of color is the An Obscure Magic Series by Viola Grace. The first three books in the series, One Part Human, Two Parts Demon, Three Parts Fey, follow heroine, Beneficia (Benny) Ganger, who gets more than she bargains for when she’s subjected to a ride-along with three agents of the XIA, the eXtranormal Investigation Agency (who also happen to be a vampire, a shifter, and a fey). But Benny may be harboring secret abilities of her own, the likes of which the XIA haven’t seen. The world building in this intrigued me and I just had to figure out what was going on. I think you’ll be likewise roped in. While this series has additional books, they are not featuring Benny, so I haven’t read them yet, but I’m sure Ms. Viola Grace has put just as much skill into the later books that she did in the first three.

Mark my words! You will be absolutely thrilled, positively entertained, and extremely turned on by all of these enthralling books!

In the eight years they’ve been corresponding, Mia has developed feelings for her American friend she fears won’t be returned. If by some miracle they were, she’s even more afraid a physical relationship would leave only heartbreak in its wake.

For The Win

by Rochelle Allison and Angel Lawson

Former All-Star collegiate goalie, Julian Anderson, has spent the last year off the grid, putting his life and health back together after losing nearly everything and everyone important in his life due to a series of bad decisions in college. But when he gets a call from the US Men’s Soccer team, asking him to play in the Olympic Games, he’s thrust back into the world he’s tried so hard to distance himself from.

Julian doesn’t want back in the league, especially when the dubious details of the arrangement are revealed, but accepting could give him a chance to reform his tarnished image. And, if he plays by the rules, he may have a shot at winning not just a gold medal but the heart of his first love, star forward of the Women’s team, Melina Diaz.

Focused and determined, Melina is skeptical that Julian can change his destructive ways. She plans to have little to do with her ex until the stress of the Games get to her and she finds herself falling back on the one person that knows her the best.

This August, all eyes will be on Brazil for the 2016 Summer Olympics as the world’s elite athletes come together to compete in the most prestigious sporting event of their lifetime. The Games will bring the world together but may tear Julian and Melina even further apart.

Summer Attractions

by Beth Bolden

All Jemma Keane wants is to find her voice at the sports and pop culture blog she writes for. But she’s been stuck fetching and fact-checking until she wants to scream. It isn’t until an unexpected opportunity at the Rio Olympic Games presents itself that she begins to discover a Jemma that she’d buried away long ago – a risk-taker and an adventurer who doesn’t just want to speak her mind, she wants to yell it from the top of Christ the Redeemer.

Gabriel Rocha hasn’t been back to Rio since he and his mother left more than ten years ago. He’d always imagined showing his best friend the real Rio during the Olympics, but when disaster strikes, he’s stuck with Jemma instead.

Jemma isn’t anything like what he expected. Gabe only means to protect her, but she weasels right past his guard and makes him want whatever she’ll give him. Sure, Gabe’s seen enough romantic comedies to realize how a fling with Jemma might end, but what he anticipates the least is that he never wants it to.

EXCERPT

OBSIDIAN SKY by Lara Henley

“I can’t believe you’re fucking real; I dreamt of you, and that’s all you’ve ever been until now—a dream. I lie here, touching every inch of your body, and I know you’re real, but it feels like a dream. I can’t believe how fucking perfect you are, baby; that dream has nothing on the reality of you, Are’,” he says as he kisses down the length of my neck. Am I going to do this? Am I going to give myself to him here on this beach?

“I want you so badly. You’re on my mind every second of every day. I know you want to take things slowly but I have to have you now.” He nibbles down my legs and I’m in pure ecstasy.

“You can have whatever you want, Brandon. I’m yours.” I say barely mumbling the words out. “Take me Brandon, I’m yours.

“Fuck, don’t say stuff like that to me. It’s so fucking hot.”

“Take me, Brandon. You have no idea how long I’ve waited for you.” Wait what? Did I just say that shit to him?

“What do you mean?” he says, huffing as his lips make their way down to my breasts. The anticipation of his lips is setting my insides on fire.

“Look at me for a sec,” I say, lifting his head from my body. I miss him already. “I saw you, Brandon, in a store when we were kids. I never forgot your eyes for one second. You were with, I’m guessing, your mom and you looked at me like you’d known me for years. Like you peered into my soul and I never forgot you. I’ve been waiting for you ever since, and now, here you are.”

“Fuck, were you dressed in some little weird black dress and a white bonnet thing on?” He asks.

“Yeah, that was me.” Shit, I don’t want to get into this tonight.

“I remember you now. I knew I knew you. I remember wondering why you had on that weird dress. I hadn’t seen anything like that. My mom slapped my hand for staring at you for so long. I remember your hazel eyes, Are’. I never forgot them either. Come here, please.” I throw my arms around him and kiss him deep and hard. My tongue makes circles in his mouth and he moans, lighting a fire beneath me. “Hold on, baby. I have some blankets in the car we can use. I want to feel only you and not the sand.” As soon as Brandon lets me go, I immediately miss his warmth. He jogs over to the truck and comes back with three blankets. This is going to be a night that I’ll never forget.

A2A Sneak Peek Sunday – Grave Possession (Wraith 3) by Angel Lawson #ASMSG #SneakPeak #ParanormalRomance

Sneak Peek Sunday

In Shadow BoundWraith readers met Jane Watts. Seventeen and scared. Her classmates thought she was a freak and her best friend was a ghost.  With the help of the school’s resident bad boy, Connor Jacobs, she found a way to find a balance between the living in the dead, while almost losing her own life.

In Shadow Bound Jane found herself with both a real life boyfriend and best friend, but struggled with the weight of her family “gift.” As she learned more about her abilities the more she encountered the dark side of death–and what it does to the people you love.

On February 18th the Wraith Series comes to a gripping end.

Strong.

Loyal.

Independent.

These aren’t the words Jane ever expected to use to describe herself, but in the years since she first began seeing ghosts things have changed. A lot. Jane has spent the last two years losing one person after the other. Both dead and alive. But this year things will be different. She’s entering her freshman year of art school, rooming with her best friend Ava and has a new boyfriend. Oh, and she’s no longer afraid that she’s Shadow Bound with a direct connection to ghosts. In fact, she’s learned to use her abilities for her benefit.

Jane soon discovers she can’t walk away from her past. The wounds from her battle with Charlotte are deep and no matter what she tells herself, the break up with Connor weighs heavy on her heart. Balancing these emotions prove to be a weakness for her and Jane finds herself in a fight against the most dangerous spirits she’s encountered yet.

Grave Possession

The buzzing razor grazed over my ear, sending vibrations across my scalp, down to my jaw. Each pass felt like a weight being lifted.

Ava smiled from the chair next to mine, swiveling back and forth. When the next hunk of hair fell to the ground, she gave me a thumbs up. I smiled back nervously, hoping her encouragement was a good thing because I wasn’t facing the mirror and, really, why did I even think this was a good idea?

“It looks awesome,” Ava said the minute the razor snapped off.  “Seriously.”

“It really does,” the stylist said. “Ready?”

“Yes,” I said. They couldn’t see my hands under the cape. They were latched to the arms of the chair, fighting off the panic, because holy crap, what had I done?

She spun my chair toward the mirror on the wall and I got the first look of my new hairstyle.

“Isn’t it amazing?” Ava asked. She stood and ran her fingers over the short-clipped hair over my ears. The rest of my hair had been pulled back in a ponytail, giving the appearance of a mohawk.

I turned my head back and forth to get the best view. I wanted something different and I got it. My hair had grown out over the last two years, since I’d cut it off in a fit of anxiety and panic. It now hung down past my shoulders to the middle of my back, but I wanted something new. Something to start off the next phase of my life.

“You look badass.” Ava’s face popped into the mirror. “Perfect for college.”

I broke into a grin, turning my head side to side, checking out the new look. The new me. “Freshman year is gonna rock.”

*

Phase two involved hot pink hair dye. Just a couple of streaks down the back. Ava left after the bleaching process, leaving me with four copies of People magazine and a lot of questions about who, exactly, picked the Sexiest Man Alive.

“Five minutes,” Suzie the hairdresser said, pulling the domed hair dryer over my head. She left me alone in the drying area, a room painted neon green. Everything had a sickly glow.

A shadow crossed the front window and I looked up in time to see the woman pass by again. It was her third attempt to come inside, but she obviously hadn’t gotten the hang of it yet. I lifted the dryer, ceasing the dull roar of air and said, “Suzie, do you mind if I step outside for some fresh air?”

“Hurry and be careful with the foils.”

“I will.”

I pushed open the glass door and found her waiting. A faint blue light radiated from the crown of her graying hair like a halo. Blue. Safe, but disappointing.

“Follow me,” I said to the woman, leading her around the side of the building. “I only have a minute. What’s the problem?”

She stepped forward and I held up my hand. “Don’t come any closer or I’ll leave and won’t help you. Just tell me what’s wrong.”

Helping the woman only took a couple of minutes now that I had a system.

  1. Always stay in public. It’s better to look crazy than dead.
  2. Almost all information can be found quickly on a smart phone. I no longer needed to go home to help these people pass over.
  3. Never make personal attachments to ghosts. I was no longer allowing them to hurt me emotionally or otherwise.
  4. Take my payment in full.

“You need to let go,” I told her. “It’s okay. The cancer finally won.”

“But I never got to see my grandbaby. Did my daughter have her? Is she okay?”

Ah. I glanced at my phone and went against my gut.

“Look, I never read the obituaries. It’s too depressing. But I’ll read the names of the survivors and you let me know if it’s there, okay?”

Hope lit in her faded eyes and she nodded.

“Survived by her two sons, Robert and James, and their wives—“

“It’s my daughter,” she repeated. I skipped ahead.

“One daughter, Karen, age 29, and her three granddaughters, Macy, Ariana and Bridget.”

“Bridget. That’s her.”

“Great,” I said, pushing the phone back in my pocket. “It’s time for you to move on.”

“Thank you.”

“Just one thing,” I said. “Take my hand.”

“What?” she asked, staring at my hand in confusion.

“Take it,” I said, thrusting it toward her.

Tentatively she placed her hand on mine and a surge of energy rushed through my limbs, filling the darkness and pushing the cold that had settled in my bones last year. The relief would be fleeting, but the small hit would hold me over until I could find something more substantial later.

I re-entered the salon and found Suzie waiting for me. She checked her watch. “Don’t blame me if your hair falls out,” she said.

“I won’t.” I settled into the swiveling chair, cheeks rosy in the mirror. “Let’s do this.”

My Review of Odin’s Murder

Ethan Tyrell knows how to work the system because that’s where he’s languished most of his life. Without a loving family to keep him on the straight-and-narrow, he harbors bitter anger, and might have fallen through the cracks were it not for a caring social worker who recognized his talent and pulled some strings to get him into a refined honors program at a local college. Each student has been selected based on a unique skillset they bring to the table. Or are they?

Getting into scrapes don’t bother Ethan, but it might ruin his chances of of staying out of prison. However, trouble seems to follow him, and she’s a smart, leggy brunette named Memory Erickssen who has the goods and knows just how to flaunt them to her advantage. She also happens to be Ethan’s roommate’s twin sister, and somehow they all get thrown together for a group project by a quirky professor who seems hell-bent on amplifying Ethan’s suffering among the nerds.

Early on, Ethan doubts his ability to keep up with these academically gifted students, questioning why he was thrown together with the likes of the brilliant twins, and Faye, the daughter of an expert linguist who has come into her own as an expert in ancient languages and mythology.  Ethan’s photography, however, is not shabby, so he has a gift to share with the team. When Memory’s roommate, Sonja, from the previous year is a no-show, the project group begins down by one, which irritates Julian, Memory’s twin, to no end. Julian is competitive and wants to win the competition since he came so close to doing so the year before. The team struggles to impress the professor academically while solving the mystery of first Sonja’s disappearance, and then the methodical dropping of other team members like flies–or dead crows.

This New Adult paranormal romance is one of the most intelligent I’ve read since the advent of this new genre. Lawson and Gold spin a savvy tale which delves into a little-used mythology that makes it a fresh read. The characters are as mature as a group of soon-to-be college matriculaters can be, and very well-rounded. None are left without a purpose or used inappropriately in the story. Both the main plot and the sub-plots are very-well written and fleshed out to their potential. The romance that blossoms between the characters happens naturally, and isn’t forced or thrust immediately upon the reader. The primary story threads effortlessly through Ethan and Memory’s love-hate relationship that finally culminates in a connection that isn’t contrived or insta-love as a lot of YA/NA stories tend to be today.

The authors have an unparalleled skill for writing wonderful prose and one-liners that keep the reader interested in what these characters do and say. Even if there wasn’t a couple of burgeoning romances interwoven into the story, the solving of the mystery alone would keep a reader on their toes.

As the students uncover layer after layer of the mythology surrounding their research subject, they discover clues that bring them closer to figuring out where their members are going. But will they be too late?

I give Odin’s Murder 5 out of 5 stars!

“Hard time prepared me for many things, but playing research assistant to a flock of nerds wasn’t one of them.”

Ethan Tyrell is out of his element at the College Scholastic Honors Program for exceptional students. But at least he’s out of prison. Keeping his temper and his hands to himself isn’t so easy when an irritating professor demands full participation with a mismatched study group, where he clashes with his roommate’s sister, Memory.

Memory Erikssen is not the kind of girl a boy can forget; she makes sure of that. Quick with both a charcoal pencil and a lipstick, she won’t draw the same line or walk the same path twice, and antagonizing Ethan is a break from the usual academic doldrums.

Ethan and Memory find themselves tangled together by more than their special abilities–and mutual irritation–as members of their team go missing, and they unravel a dangerous mystery that spans centuries of local and distant legends.

Sneak Peek Teaser!

She found the building easily and wondered how she’d never noticed it before. Granted, they were in an industrial area. The building was mixed in between older homes and empty buildings. The outside was clean—no, spotless. The parking lot tidy, including the area near the chain-link fence that surrounded the property. Ari opened the car door and said to the boy in the passenger seat, “Grab your stuff.”
The full extent of Curtis’s belongings fit into a manila envelope and the clothing he wore when he’d been arrested. Ari hadn’t had time to go by his home to see if there were any personal items he could have used. That would have been doubtful anyway. Odds were, the minute he got locked up, his clothing spread throughout the rest of the family.
“I’m supposed to live here?” he asked. Curtis was only fifteen, but carried himself like he was older, like so many of these kids. They were forced to grow up fast. Lean and fit, Curtis was very big for his age. Ari knew before he’d started skipping school he’d been active in sports. The police had documented more than once that he was a skilled runner. He just needed to learn how to use that power for good and not evil.
“I’ve never been here,” Ari told him in a stern voice. “But this is a last-chance stop. Whatever it is, it’s better than detention, which is where you’re headed next.”
Curtis slipped behind his case manager as she walked into the building.
“Oh, wow,” she said, knocked in the face by the overpowering smell. Soon though, even the rank stench was eclipsed by the sounds.
The boy stepped in front of Ari with his eyes wide and said, “No fucking way.”
Ari’s head snapped in his direction, but she didn’t scold him as she normally would have. She felt just as stunned. Her senses were assaulted by sweat and rubber, combined with a muggy, damp heat. And the sounds. Well, it sounded like someone was getting beaten to death.
“What the hell is this?” Curtis said, pushing Ari’s limit on foul language.
“Cut the cussing, Curtis,” she said. “A gym, I suppose?” But it was more than a gym. There were four boxing rings in the center of the building and rows of weights and cardio machines along each side. Near the front door, a huge trophy case held dozens of gold trophies, each with a tiny boxer or fighter on the top. Ari saw a dozen or so guys of various ages working out around the gym.
A long countertop ran along the barrier between the gym and the entry area. Hanging on the wall was a large sign with the letters GYC, and the name: Glory Youth Center. Ari spotted a young man folding towels and placing them in a stack.
“Come on,” she said to Curtis. They approached the counter and she introduced herself to the kid.
“I’m Ari Grant. I’m here to meet a—” she pulled the note out of her pocket. “Mr. Davis. We have an appointment at eleven.”
“Yes, ma’am,” the boy replied. “Let me tell him you’re here.” He looked a little older than Curtis, maybe seventeen or so. Broad shouldered and muscular. He had a bandage over his eye and quickly disappeared around the corner, away from the gym floor.
Curtis studied a row of photographs behind the counter. He glanced at Ari. “So you want me to come work out or something? I thought this was a home.”
Before Ari could answer, or not answer since she had no idea, the boy came back followed by a handsome man. His dark hair was shaved close to his head and when his eyes met Ari’s everything went from normal to very, very awkward.
