LV’s Monday Meanderings… September 25, 2018

Happy Tuesday fellow Meanderers! As you all well know by now, I created this regular newsletter to keep me engaged with you on a regular basis. This will provide a way for you to know what’s going on with me even though I’m not camping out on Social Media anymore. The Hate U Give is coming to the big screen in October. It is my most anticipated movie of the year! Check out my homegirl Angie Thomas’s books below. Also, in this issue, I’m sharing Mia Sheridan’s Dane’s Storm. Stick around long enough and you’ll see how much I love Angie Thomas, Mia Sheridan and their novels, too!

THE HATE YOU GIVE (Original Cover)

Writing, Writing, Writing!

As an African American woman who just happens to be a writer, I don’t very often write or read about subjects that put me in a dark place. It’s a personal choice, because there’s so much real stuff going on in the world, romance is my way of escaping what is sad, unsavory and downright hurtful. But, inevitably there are moments when I am compelled to emerge into reality, because it doesn’t go away no matter how hard I try to ignore it. So, I have to watch news and read books that are culturally relevant and timely as they relate to current events. The Hate U Give is a book that I chose to read because it was all those things and more. The author of The Hate You Give is a young woman who lives within a 30 mile radius of where I spent a large portion of my young adult life. Having that in common with the author made her book a “must read” for me because despite our state being one that is often ridiculed for its current ranking in education and its history of oppression, it is by contrast a place that is rich in artistic culture. So often when I am asked by others who wonder, oftentimes aloud, “Can anything good come from Mississippi?” My answer is most emphatically a resounding, “Yes!” And in the interest of time, I won’t elaborate in this newsletter exactly why (I’ll leave that for another time). Just trust me that there’s a long list of writers who hail from this southern state that is often last in most everything else.

Angie Thomas, an author who was born, bred and still resides in Jackson, MS penned The Hate You Give as her inaugural debut into publication, and what a hit it has been. All you have to do is look at the long list of accolades below which The Hate You Give has received, and within the next couple of weeks, this groundbreaking book will come to the Big Screen with a star-studded cast. If this isn’t success for a denizen of the lowliest state in the union, I don’t know what is. To say I am proud of Ms. Thomas is an understatement.

In this Monday’s Meanderings, again on a Tuesday, I’m sharing something with you that is near and dear to my heart. Not only because it is a bestselling young adult novel, but because it addresses a subject matter that is yet another stain on America that we can’t seem to remove from the fabric of its history.

Speaking of writing, if you want to read any of my books while you’re waiting on my new stuff to publish, you can find all my books here, where most of them are $0.99: LV Lewis books!

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don’t miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas’s powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

On The Come Up by Angie Thomas

Description

This is the highly anticipated second novel by Angie Thomas, the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning The Hate U Give.

Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill.

But it’s hard to get your come up when you’re labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral…for all the wrong reasons.

Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri doesn’t just want to make it—she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.

Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, On the Come Up is an ode to hip hop from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn’t always free.

My Review

Mia Sheridan can write her a$$ off. This is a given. My life as an author became much more meaningful when I began to read her books. Meeting her through our shared passion for writing and a similar life experience (which occurs in Dane’s Storm) made me feel as if I weren’t in the writing life, or life alone. All I’ve learned about Mia through her writing and knowing her on Facebook has shown me repeatedly what a great down to earth person she is, and what a great wife and mother she is. I know a lot of authors through my experience as an Indie Author, but they don’t all live up to the hype they share on social media, but Mia Sheridan does, and I love her for it.

All that said, it’s time for me to talk about Dane’s Storm. If you’ve read Mia’s stories long enough, you know that she writes a series called, “Sign of Love” novels. Each story features a protagonist who carries a particular zodiac sign. Dane’s Storm is inspired by Cancer.

Dane and Audra fell in love as teens. They marry early, but a tragedy destroys their marriage. Like many women who experience what Audra did, she finds something with which to consume the pain. In her case, it’s her flower shop. Almost a decade passes before they come into contact again. As with any relationship that has lain fallow for such a long time, their early interactions are quite awkward, but they each harbor feelings for the other that doesn’t seem possible after so many years. It’s being foisted into the position of having to trust again after such a devastating tragedy that gets them both. When the plan crashes in a mountainous area in the dead of winter, they are forced to trust each other enough to survive, which may just resurrect the feelings they believed long dead.

Mia’s stories are real, provocative, and entertaining. As with all her novels I’ve ever read, she captures my attention from the beginning and doesn’t let go until it’s fulfilling resolution.

Dane’s Storm by Mia Sheridan

Description

A gripping, exquisitely romantic new standalone by New York Times bestselling author Mia Sheridan.

Dane was her first kiss and the only man she ever loved . . . until their marriage crashed and burned. Now Audra has built a quiet life for herself running a flower shop she’s put her whole heart into. But Audra is left reeling when an unexpected circumstance brings Dane back into her world. He’s still as breathtaking as he ever was, and he still affects her more than any man she’s ever known. Yet learning to trust him again could be a matter of life and death . . .

When Dane offers to fly his ex-wife from California to Colorado to help correct a wrong, he never imagined the harrowing twist of fate awaiting them. When their plane goes down in the snowy mountain wilderness, Dane and Audra are stranded with no one to turn to but each other. Will their second crash end their lives—or save their souls?

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY CANCER. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

LV’s Monday Meanderings… A Day Late :( –But I have a FREE Book for You!

Happy Tuesday, Monday Meanderers! Yesterday was quite an exiting day at the dentist’s office. My mouth is still throbbing from the experience. How was your Monday? As you most of you know by now, I’ve created this regular newsletter since beginning my newest day job to keep me engaged with you on a regular basis. This will provide a way for you to know what’s going on with me even though I’m not camping out on Social Media anymore. Hope the rest of your week is fantabulous! I have a FREE book for you down below. Grab your copy before the FREE feature ends this week.

Writing, Writing, Writing!

This week began on Sunday with mishaps. My son dabbles in MMA (mixed martial arts), and he flew out over the weekend to fight out west. First, I was unable to go see him fight (bummer!), then he missed his flight back home. Guess who drove three hours to the airport where he returned and back to pick him up from a red-eye? Me! That’s who. See, I thought I was over that when he was out of middle school, but nah. They still call for Mom when all else fails. LOL Then of course I got to have the excruciating below the gumline cleaning at my Dentist’s office prior to driving out to get my youngest at 3 a.m. It’s quite peaceful driving at that time of morning, but I’m not much of a long-distance driver. In fact, I hate driving. I thought, surely my wonderful son will drive back if I left at an ungodly hour to pick him up, but noooo! He had jetlag, and my soundtrack on the way back was his light snoring.

So, this is why you’re getting a Tuesday Meandering. It just seems like if my schedule is thrown off in any way, I can’t seem to get my newsletter out on time. I really need to use the scheduler, but often times, I’m wondering just what I’m going to meander about up until the last minute. But life happens, right? And I wonder why my writing is always lagging…

Speaking of writing, if you want to read any of my books while you’re waiting on my new stuff to publish, you can find all my books here, where most of them are $0.99: LV Lewis books!

During the Summer Olympics in Brazil in 2016, I penned Going for Gold. My intentions at that time was to write three novellas all centered around the Olympics that year, but there was some work-life balance issues I couldn’t work out, so the other two were never published. They were drafted, but I didn’t feel like they were ready for the world. Perhaps, I will eventually finish the series in time for next Summer Olympics. LOL In the meantime grab your FREE copy and enjoy…

Going for Gold

The Olympics have never been so sexy.

Olympic pole-vaulter Gunnar Kingsley is competing in Rio, where he will finally meet Mia Orlán—his longtime online pen pal. He assumes Mia thinks he’s just an average guy, and hopes that her impoverished upbringing has prevented her from researching him.

In the eight years they’ve been corresponding, Mia has developed feelings for her American friend she fears won’t be returned. If by some miracle they were, she’s even more afraid a physical relationship would leave only heartbreak in its wake.

Meanwhile, Gunnar fears if she knows of his elite ranking, she’ll end up being just another girl who’ll treat him like a shallow jock. He wants more from her. Will Gunnar come clean when the torch is lit in Rio, or will Mia confront him first?

Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire

My Review

Jamie McGuire is an author I’ve known about for a long time. I read Beautiful Disaster when it first came out and loved it. I was in the midst of a fairly busy writing career of my own when her Walking Disaster (Travis’s POV) came out, so I never got around to reading it until now. One thing about this story that blew me away is the similarities that Travis Maddox’s backstory has to my Tristan White’s backstory in “The Venture Capitalist.” Both young men lost their mothers at an early age to cancer. While reading the prologue of Walking Disaster, it made me go back to The Venture Capitalist and read Tristan’s backstory again. It’s uncanny how great minds really do think alike sometimes, and we tell a story that has similar plot points, but in a totally different way.

Unlike my Tristan, Travis is a wild man. In fact, he meets Abby during college, so he’s very young, but very intense in his feelings for her. Tristan has intense feelings for Keisha, but he’s very polished in his pursuit of her. Travis pulls out all the stops and then some. OMG, this guy was like a bull in a proverbial china shop. From the moment he gave Abby her nickname–Pigeon–I was a goner! And my the introduction to his brothers. There are Maddox Twins–Tyler and Taylor! Much like Tristan and Nathan, my twins, these Maddox Twins are scorching, and not only because of their career as Firefighters. Then there’s Trenton, the tattooed tattoo artist, and Thomas the FBI Agent. So, Walking Disaster has reeled me in, so I’m currently binging on the rest of the Maddox Brothers stories.

So far, I’ve completed Trent and Cami’s story, Tyler and Ellison’s story, and Thomas and Liis’s story. Each story shares more about each of the brothers and interweaves the overarching story of the Mobster that Thomas and Travis will eventually take down. I’ve even read former FBI Agent Scott Trexler and Darby’s story. Jamie McGuire writes stories about hard-loving men, who pursue their women in such a dogged fashion, you can’t help but root for them.

So, read the Maddox stories in the Beautiful series. You’ll be glad you did.

Summary

How much is too much to love? Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

Finally, the highly anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster.

Can you love someone too much?

Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. But just when he thinks he is invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Beautiful Disaster, Abby had her say. Now it’s time to see the story through Travis’s eyes.

Teaching classes at the co-op is no longer enough, and now he’s going to have to sell more than just his art to the wealthy, sex-starved women in his classes. But when Romy comes along, she makes everything more complicated. She sees the truth in his paintings — a truth no one else has realized, until now.

Romy and Caleb might have a real shot together — one that could heal them both. But when ghosts from their pasts re-emerge, determined to keep them apart, will they be strong enough to hold on to each other?

Description

A chance encounter in rural Texas leads two strangers to a love over thirty years in the making.

Blake

Her trip across the country led her to me, my town—my booth on my lunch break and I never forgot her. I never forgot our conversation or her… taste when I’d been fortunate enough to have it.

She had me in a world where she was mine and, even though the experience of her had only been for a short while, I took that memory into the rest of my life, Anita… the girl who spoke of dreams.

She reminded me of my dreams and that it was okay to have them. I made those desires into reality years later, after a fallen marriage and a lifetime of hesitance, but never once did Ann leave me.

I never thought I needed anyone when the girl with talks of dreaming finally made it back into my life over three decades later, my family and the strong boys I raised into men all I needed. Anita sure proved me wrong, because not only did I need that woman, I lived for her once I had her back in my life.

My sudden heart attack may have brought us back to each other, but our history…

It gave us both a second chance.

LV’s Monday Meanderings… September 5, 2018

Hello Meanderers! As you all know, Monday was the Labor Day Holiday, so I took a break, so I’m offering you your Monday Meanderings on a Wednesday.

I’ve created this regular newsletter since beginning my newest day job to keep me engaged with you on a regular basis. This will provide a way for you to know what’s going on with me even though I’m not camping out on Social Media anymore. So, my Audiobooks got new links for me to share in August, but I’m sharing them in September. Hope you’ll check them out. My narrator, Marie Hélène  is fabulous!

Writing, Writing, Writing!

Shortly after my first two books were published, I decided to check out ACX to get them made into audiobooks. If you’re not familiar with it, ACX is the arm of Audible that allows Indie authors to easily get their books in audiobook format. The process in itself was fascinating. I was able to sample the voices of many would-be narrators by listening to their samples posted on the site. Once I heard a few that seemed as if they would “fit,” I allowed them to audition using a sampling of prose from my books. Nothing gave me greater pleasure than to hear my words come alive through the voice actors who responded to my posting. It was transformational, because it’s one thing to see your words written on the page, but to have them spoken brings a whole new flavor of nuance to it.

In the Summer, ACX announced that it was rolling out a new Bounty program for writers to receive a share of the royalties from their audiobooks. There have been critics of this new system, so I’m not altogether sure if it will yield anything whatsover for me personally, but I felt that I needed to share with you the availability of my audiobooks for the three of my novels I’ve been able to have recorded. Most weeks, my Meanderings have to do with books, so I was leaving out an integral part of my brand by not sharing information on my audiobooks.

Another good thing about my audiobooks is they are all Whispersync ready, which means you can switch between reading and listening whenever you want if you have the eBook and purchase the audiobook. I love to read and listen along at the same time. How cool is that?

Here are my nice square audiobook covers, which you can click on to see if you’d like to make them your own.  Otherwise, you can listen to the sample and decide later. Warcross by Marie Lu

My Review

Marie Lu is one of my very favorite YA novelists. Long before I read her Warcross series, I read her Young Elites and Legend series’s. She is a word, brilliant. Her characters imbue honor, bravery, loyalty and a whole host of characteristics which are great examples to young adults, and character flaws which also bear cautionary tales for young and old alike. Her writing style is crisp yet unbelievably descriptive. You’ll find yourself totally immersed in her worlds and feeling as if you’re a part of action.

The Warcross series is about a game which has consumed popular culture all over the world. It is a world pastime, but is also lucrative for some users. Emika Chen, the protagonist, is a bounty hunter and an expert hacker who finds users who access and bet on the game illegally. When she decides to use her hacking skills to make some quick cash in the opening game of the international Warcross Championships to get herself out of a financial bind, she creates a glitch which inserts her into the game and her interaction goes viral.

While this action could’ve landed her in jail, she instead is recruited by the game’s creator, and billionaire, Hideo Tanka. He recognizes Emika’s talent and enlists her to participate in the tournament to uncover a security problem. Little does Emika know, she’s about to uncover treachery which could topple Hideo’s Warcross empire and their burgeoning romance.

While Warcross does end on a cliffhanger, you will be thoroughly satisfied with how Ms. Lu ends the first book.

I’m honored to share this one with you upon the imminent release of Wildcard, the second book in the series, which is set to drop on September 18th.

Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu—when a game called Warcross takes the world by storm, one girl hacks her way into its dangerous depths.

But the bounty-hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. LV’s Monday Meanderings… August 27, 2018

Happy Monday Readers! I’ve created this regular newsletter since beginning my newest day job to keep me engaged with you on a regular basis. This will provide a way for you to know what’s going on with me even though I’m not camping out on Social Media anymore. I’ve got exciting news to share with you this Monday. Hope you all have a fabulous week!

Writing, Writing, Writing!

There is an “M” word that most authors dislike more than any we encounter in this industry. That word, my dear friends, is Marketing. For most of us, writing is the easy part (present company excluded). Writing is easy for those who have a unique talent for crafting great prose, for writing riveting dialogue, and drafting plots that will make your toes curl. I only experience this phenomenon sometimes. Usually my writing style is more like giving birth. The story gestates in my head for a while, then I endure the labor pains of putting pen to paper, until a story is birthed months, sometimes years later. No, I am not as prolific as many of my author friends. Writing does not come easy for me (probably because I second-guess myself so much, but that my dear friends, is a story for another time). And, if writing doesn’t come easy for me, one can easily deduce that marketing is a nightmare.

I’ve been around for a while, and actually I emerged on the scene on the other side of the self-publishing bubble. I wish so many times I’d taken the opportunity to self-publish when so many of my peers did, but I didn’t (babies, life, and career happened), and in fact, I got in right around the time the bubble burst. Many friendships had already been formed, acquaintances made, cliques formed, bloggers had chosen their favorites, and most of these early alliances never allowed outsiders in. So, my marketing efforts were done very much through trial and error. The industry changes rapidly. Paradigms are always shifting, so each and every time when I’d finally figured out how to do something in marketing, inevitably that thing was transitioning, and I was never able to quite get it right.

There are many book marketing sites at writers disposal these days. Unfortunately, there are more that don’t work than do, and unless you have a friend or colleague who has used a site and can give you some feedback, it’s trail and error, my dear friends. And trial and error is okay if you have a marketing budget to speak of, but if you’re like me right now, you don’t even have a great budget, let alone a marketing one. I simply cannot afford to spend any money that won’t yield a return on investment, so I’ve been very picky lately. Or I’ve tried to be, and sometimes I still get it wrong. Which hurts my pocketbook so much, it takes weeks to recoup just the tiny bit of disposable income I could find to do marketing.

Recently, ladies and gentlemen, I submitted two of my books for a Bookbub. If you’re not familiar with Bookbub, you absolutely need to be. They are the premiere marketing site for books for authors, and the permiere site for readers looking to find new books. This is yet another marketing site I found out about later than I would have liked, but their return on investment has remained steady despite the shifting paradigms of the book industry. Most authors know that a Bookbub ad will yield dividends that it would take 15 or more author marketing venues to yield (and that is a conservative estimate). They are pricey as f#%k, but they get the job done.

I’m excited to tell you that out of the two books I submitted for a Bookbub, one of them was successful! So at the end of September, my book, The Venture Capitalist, Tristan’s point of view of Fifty Shades of Jungle Fever, will be featured on Bookbub, and I’m over the moon about it. So, stay tuned. I’ll make a big announcement when it gets closer to the time. In the meantime, if you’re not following me on Bookbub, I hope you will, because not only will they keep you apprised of my new books as they come out, they will share my book recommendations, and sales of my books and others, if we’re lucky enough to snag a Bookbub ad. So click on the Bookbub icon below and follow me there. You will be glad you did!

Briar by Ripley Prosperina

My Review

I am part of the original Twilight Fandom, and I have a thing for Vampires. So sue me!

Anywho, I was quite taken by this Reverse Harem spin on the genre. Ripley Prosperina whose other RH books I’ve read really did her thing with this one! Move over J. R. Ward, Ripley Prosperina has created a quartet of Vampires that I love almost as much as your Black Dagger Brotherhood. Hudson, Valen, Sylvain and Marcus, Oh My Effing God! Listen, I guess I need to write a real review of this book, because, really that is the purpose of this venue. Right?

Okay, so Briar Hale is allergic to sunlight, or so she thinks. Her diagnosed condition is EPP (and I won’t even try to remember the medical term here). Whenever she allows any ultraviolet rays to touch her skin she blisters and burns. I’m talking serious second and third degree burns. In fact she’d probably die within a few minutes were she to remain exposed. She moves to Boston to attend Boston College for her Master’s Degree where she attends a symposium for one Dr. Hudson Nors who is the foremost authority on her condition. An accident reaching for a fallen glove causes her to be burned and Dr. Nors and his friend, Marcus come to her rescue. Unbeknownst to Briar they share a bond of brotherhood that she learns about later.

One by one, she meets the four brothers and early on doesn’t know about their connection until she gets lost in the city and decides to take a detour through a wooded area. When she is saved by Sylvain, one of the quartet, from a fate I don’t want to describe here, she befriends them each in turn, despite her rocky start with Dr. Nors (the reclusive and anti-social genius). Soon, Briar learns why Dr. Nors has been notoriously antisocial, and why Marcus, Sylvain, and Valen can’t seem to stay away from her.

As they each seek her out, she develops a caring for each of them she’s never known, since her condition has kept her from having even rudimentary friendships. Despite her early accident and brush with death, she’s determined to stay in Boston and finish the education she’s desired. The brothers become convinced she is fated to be theirs, but she isn’t privy to their feelings until a sinister and deadly threat from their past learns of their connection and his hellbound on removing the sickly girl from the equation.

The story ramps up from there. While Briar’s story is the first and contains all the world-building, it doesn’t detract from the story at all. And, because I knew this was a trilogy, I wasn’t befuddled or unhappy by the way this first story ended. You will be drawn in as I was by how well Ms. Prosperina drew these characters and Briar’s reaction to each of the brothers. Their back stories as are fascinating as the current conflict they find themselves in and I believe you will be as taken as I was by these Reverse-Harem Vampires in this series.

LV’s Monday Meanderings… August 20, 2018

Happy Monday fellow Meanderers! I’ve created this regular newsletter since beginning my newest day job to keep me engaged with you on a regular basis. This will provide a way for you to know what’s going on with me even though I’m not camping out on Social Media anymore. I read a fabulous women’s fiction novel this week, which I can’t wait to share with you. Hope your week turns out great!

Writing, Writing, Writing!

Romance is the primary genre which I read and write. I never tire of authors putting their unique spins on a hero and heroine’s love stories. I have loved to read since the days of learning how in pre-school and elementary school, where I read everything from Dr. Zeuss’s classics to The Box Car Children, and Little House on The Prairie. My entry into the world of romance began when I was just a pre-teen when I began to read my older sister’s books. She read steamy paperback novels (Harlequin) and true story magazines, which I daresay gave me my entree into learning about the “birds and the bees.” Thankfully, this same sister gave me “the talk,” so I wouldn’t be stupid when it came to interacting with the opposite sex. As a teenager, I began to make my own book choices and I was able to read an eclectic mix of literature which is what has shaped me to be the author I am today.

As most of you well know, I began my career by writing an erotic romance series. I followed that up with erotic women’s fiction, then dabbled in paranormal and science fiction. However, regardless of what I write, there will most likely always be a romance that figures somewhere prominently in the story. I have always been a romantic at heart despite real life not always mirroring the fiction I read. I always hold out hope that eventually my significant other will get how to be as romantic as my book heroes.

In this Monday’s Meanderings, I’m sharing something from all the genres in which I write all at once: women’s fiction, contemporary romance, and paranormal. Hope something from these offerings tickle your fancy.

Not Her Daughter by Rea Frey

My Review

It has been a while since I’ve read such a gut-wrenching novel which blurs the lines between right and wrong so skillfully. The story Frey weaves moves from present day to the past to current with a whip-smart plotting style that keeps the reader guessing what’s going to happen next. Sarah Walker is for all intents and purposes, a success. Her business, which produces educational games for schools all over the world, is growing in leaps and bounds. However, she has just gone through a breakup with her boyfriend Ethan, which has left her heart in tatters. As the author gives us glimpses into what transpired between the couple, Sarah is also remembering snatches of her own childhood, which has largely informed who she has become as an adult.

As Sarah navigates being newly single, and the only child of a father who is just as heartbroken as she is from the wife who left him years ago, her situation becomes even more dicey when she encounters Emma Townsend, a little girl who reminds her so much of herself, Sarah feels compelled to rescue this child from the untenable family dynamic she is drowning in. From that point, the story gets even more complicated. And with that, I’ll leave you to discover the rest for yourself, because I promise you, this story will evoke emotions in you that you won’t be able to parse without going all in with Sarah, Emma, and an ensemble of characters that are at once well-developed and grounded enough to make you feel as if you’re living this story right along with them.

Not Her Daughter is precisely the kind of women’s fiction that makes me experience “all the feels,” like I’m immersed in a real-life situation which I’m unable to extricate myself from without the author’s expert plot twists giving me a believable way out.

LV’s Monday Meanderings… August 13, 2018

My Monday Meanderings for today come through physical pain. I am taking Aleve because I overdid it this weekend. I must remember, I’m no longer 20-something, a fact which my daughter reminds me of on a regular basis. LOL. As I’m sure you’re aware by now, I’ve created this weekly newsletter since beginning my newest day job (and my weekend moonlighting) to keep me engaged with you on a regular basis. This will provide a way for you to know what’s going on with me even though I’m not camping out on Social Media anymore. I don’t think Aleve has any side effects that will affect my ability to meander, but who knows…

Writing, Writing, Writing!

This weekend, I began the process of rewriting portions of my novella. It had to be done, because things changed under circumstances I’m unable to divulge right now, but my intentions are to make it better than it was. Sometime when stories sit a while, authors realize (with the help of first line beta readers) that the plot sometimes doesn’t work the way you originally envisioned it. Thus, the need for re-tweaking. The evolution of said novella shall not be televised, or otherwise shared since this process does not make for fascinating blog or newsletter fodder. However, I will share when it’s complete. Again.

This novella has a shiny new cover and the summary will be tweaked to match the re-tweaked plot. As I mentioned before, I’ll be rolling the cover out pretty close to my book release. In approximately three months, there will be marketing, more beta reading, and lots of fun stuff going on before it can see the light of day. Parker Cavanaugh, my hero in this new novella, is chomping at the bit to meet you all!

Thrillers from The Past (aka Recent Re-reads)!

Back in the day before I even thought about self-publishing, a friend introduced me to M.J. Rose’s Butterfield Institute Series, which includes the books The Halo Effect, The Delilah Complex, and The Venus Fix. Last week I re-read these wonderful books because I haven’t read a series of books with as compelling a premise as this one in quite some time, and I was really kind of missing Detective Noah Jordain, the sexy-as-sin cop who becomes the love interest for our heroine, Dr. Morgan Snow, sex therapist extraordinaire. Every single time I’ve read these books, I insert Harry Connick, Jr. into my mind as Detective Noah Jordain. This guy would be perfect were these books to be adapted to the Big Screen. I know no other actor who could believably pull this off, so I’m sticking with Harry, whom I love with the white-hot intensity of a thousand burning suns! But I digress. (Fans self.)

So, if you’re looking for a series that is a thriller which has romantic suspense, and a healthy dose of believablility, you can’t go wrong with these books. Although written in 2005-2006 timeframe, they are still a relevant page-turner worthy enough to read now!

In Death Series by J.D. Robb

If you’ve ever had an in depth conversation with me about books, you might know that my favorite futuristic police procedural novels are the “In Death Series,” by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts to folks who love her romances and genre fiction).

I’ve been reading these books forever (and I won’t say how long because I’m always looking for ways not to date myself). Anywho, Robb’s In Death Series follows the cases of Detective Eve Dallas, a New York cop from the years circa 2058 and beyond. The heroine gets her surname from the city in which she was born because she lost her only remaining parent in an horrific fashion and she hadn’t been given a real name. Her backstory is as fascinating as the cases chronicled in the In Death Series. You will be drawn in by J. D. Robb’s taut prose and riveting plots.

And if you like black-haired Irishmen, you may just fall in love with Eve’s better half, Roarke. I know I did, which is probably what kept me reading the series even more than Eve Dallas herself. Just saying!
